The Howard G. Buffett Foundation (HGBF) is a private family foundation that works to improve the standard of living and quality of life for the world’s most impoverished and marginalized populations.
Our primary funding areas are agricultural resource development for smallholder and subsistence farmers and clean water delivery to vulnerable communities in Africa and Central America. Our funding for water is primarily provided through our Global Water Initiative. HGBF also provides funding for nutrition-based programs, support for refugees and internally displaced people, and journalism initiatives focused on student learning and improved governance. There is a limited focus on wildlife conservation where the Foundation has over a decade of experience and has built long-term relationships.
We also support projects in our local communities, Central Illinois and Nebraska. As we move forward, there will be a stronger emphasis on advocacy, policy and research.
HGBF funds programs in difficult environments, especially those experiencing or recovering from conflict where some donors are reluctant to work. We focus on these areas both because we know the populations are extremely vulnerable to human rights abuses and because we hope to leverage other donors to join us.
